Leucodepletion :-is a procedure that minimizes white blood cell (WBC) transmission in transfused blood. WBC’s are the most common contaminant in the blood and are known to cause various adverse effects such as: Febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions – one of the most common transfusion associated complications that causes fevers and leads to stopping of the transfusion.
Transmission of viral infections such as Cytomegalovirus (CMV) that causes serious complications in newborns, transplant and immunocompromised patients.
Refractoriness to platelet transfusions. Platelet refractoriness is a major cause of problems in the long-term management of patients that are transfusion dependent such as chemotherapy and oncology patients.
Individual Donor Nucleic Acid Testing :-donor nucleic acid testing (ID-NAT) that is performed on donated blood dramatically improves the safety of blood transfusion by reducing the chances of transmission of HIV, hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV). Most commonly used screening methods pick up these viruses by looking for antibodies which may develop only many months after acquiring the infection. ID-NAT reduces the window period by looking for viral DNA or RNA even before antibodies are formed. Thus, we can detect these infections at a very early stage, which is not possible with routine screening tests in most of the blood banks.
Blood Component Therapy donor can give one unit of whole blood. However, blood has many different living and non living parts that can be separated and stored. This separation of blood is into what is known as blood components. Eastcoast is among very few centers that performs this.Only the portion of blood that is required by the patient is administered, thereby minimizing the risks of transfusion and allowing for efficient use of a donated whole blood unit.
Donor CriteriaCriteria for blood donation have also been defined to minimize risks to the donor.
These criteria include:
Donor should be in good health.
The minimum acceptable patient weight is =45 kg for whole blood donation and =55 kg for apheresis donation.
Hemoglobin level should be = 12.5 gm/dl.age should be between 18 – 60 years.
Donors are screened on basis of guidelines laid down by various bodies such as the Central Drug Controller of India under Drug and Cosmetic Act (DCA, 1940) and American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
